Canon Note: Byleth was male, all available students were recruited, all possible commanders were spared. This is due to there being multiple variables available in the Three Houses canon.
Personality: The first thing one notices about Bernadetta is that she's incredibly shy and anxious. Due to everything that she's been through it can be hard for her to bond with other people or even realize that they may mean well at first. In fact, after the way her father raised her, she often will expect the worst before she expects anything else. People must be out to hurt her or even kill her! It's hard for her to believe right away that they really want to be her friend.
This anxiety can often lead to her being more comfortable being alone in her room. Like it's a safety net. A place where nothing could possibly go wrong as long as she's locked inside of it. After all the times of her father tying her up to make her a submissive wife, she's learned to appreciate time alone. It's her comfort zone and makes her feel happy and able to be herself. Silly little songs she makes up or the reading of many books can all be done here.
Of course that doesn't mean she never leaves her room. At times she will find the energy to brave the outside world. Sometimes it's for missions and other times it's simply because, in the end, she really does long for the friendship her father never allowed her to have. Again, it can be difficult for her to interact with people since she'll assume the worst (either about them or about herself) but she does long to have a lot of friends like she knows others do. Her greatest worry is honestly just that she might not be able to live up to their expectations or that she may let them down.
For this reason one will find that she has extremely low self confidence. She fully believes that she's terrible at everything, not at all attractive, and that maybe people don't really want to be around someone as weird as her. She doesn't even blame them for any of it either. Honestly, she finds it perfectly reasonable to not want to be near her and that it's actually shocking when someone not only wants to be around her but likes her as well. Over the years she's managed to get better but there's still often a cloud that hangs over her head as she worries about people feeling like she's the worst person to be around.
On the flip side of things, this doesn't mean that Bernadetta is incapable of taking care of herself. In fact, she's shown to be quite good at it if she really feels like someone is not listening to her or is pushing her around. She wants to be treated gently and with kindness. That means not tossing her around and just leaving her alone when she really needs it. While it's possible to just pick her up and carry her around that doesn't mean she likes it. Not even a little bit.
Get to know her though and she's very sweet. She has a happy little personality and loves to talk with people that she's warmed up to. For some people she might even make little gifts in order to make herself more comfortable with them and is truly happy when people are able to become friends with her. There are definitely some odd things about her to get past (an example being that she thinks carnivorous plants are adorable) but sometimes it's fun to have weird friends.
Essentially, this is a girl who faced some major trauma as a child when her father abused her by doing things like tying her up to chairs for hours to train her or threatening to kill people she tried to make friends with. It's taken a lot of work for her to get to the point where she's at now but she finally has some friends. She can really stand up for herself if she wants to. Of course she still gets very stressed out easily and would prefer to be left alone in her room but she's trying her very best. A little bit at a time. Baby steps.
Abilities & Skills: Bernadetta is a highly skilled archer who also has some excellent growth in lance and a budding talent which makes her an excellent horseman. This makes her an excellent ally to have in combat with you. Especially with the impressive range that she has in comparison to most archers. She also has an ability unique to her where when she's injured her attacks are a little bit stronger. How this will translate in game is that when she's injured, she's have a sort of survival instinct kick in which will make her hit harder in order to live.
Outside of combat, Bernadetta is proficient in gardening, writing stories, embroidery/sewing, and art like sketching and painting. She has impressive knowledge in all of these categories due to many days spent alone trying to keep herself entertained with more than just reading books. It has also given her an appreciation for cute things as well as things she finds cute like creepy creatures or carnivorous plants.
Magically, she has no real ability but she does possess a Crest of Indech. When this activates it allows her the chance to attack again right away.
Inventory/Companions:
The Inexhaustible – A bow that once allowed her to easily attack twice and healed her slowly with use but will now just be a fancy looking bow
Quiver – Obviously where she keeps her arrows
Clothes – Literally just the clothes she's already wearing
Sketchbook – Filled with some drawings she's been working on
Needle and Thread – You know, just in case...
Choice: Fae. Second choice is Arachne.
Reason: Bernadetta has always found herself to be small. She's an incredibly shy person who prefers to hide rather than face the world around her. However, I'm wanting to help bring her out of her shell. For that reason, I would like to see if she can be a Fae. It seems like it would suit her initially for the sheer fact that they're small and shy, so much like how she sees herself. They even possess illusions that would allow her to hide away if she wants to.
With that said there's the mischievous side of the Fae which could be really fun to play with someone like Bernadetta. I'd like to use some of the psychological changes in order to have her come out of her shell a bit more. Maybe playing pranks on friends or coming out of her room more often to have fun. Things that would be usually out of her comfort zone. It could be the little push that she needs in order to get herself out there and befriend people. There's, of course, the added benefit of a bond helping to level out her emotions and even allowing someone to be there for her if she needs someone for support. Basically I believe that the Fae could be a fascinating exploration for so shy and anxious a character since it would really push her in a new direction which could be extremely healthy for her!
But if not the Fae then I'm also interested in exploring Arachne for her. It could allow for some of the same mechanics with trickery but also it would be really cute to see her practicing embroidery using her spider traits. Which, I admit, is largely a personal thing for finding that so utterly adorable. Again, the bond mechanic would come into play here rather nicely which will make things a lot of fun to play with!
